Hawaiian Hideaway - continued

The vintage dinette table is surrounded by rattan chairs of a later date. Though from different decorative periods, the use of a common material unites the group. A glowing lantern of reinforced paper hangs above.

The only pattern in the hideaway is a printed fabric from the 1950’s. It is a giddy riot of stylized plumeria blooms in orange and white on a chocolate ground. This nearly indestructible fabric covers the draperies, chaise, occasional chairs and the dining area seat pads. Using the obligatory neutrals of white, cream, beige, and tan everywhere else, this is the garish garnish to our tropical punch!

Hawaii - Den Nestled between the view and the louvered bedroom wall is the pint-sized den. Fitted out with a desk formerly from the Guam Hilton, it is the perfect spot to catch up on e-mail or write those vacation postcards. The creamy white lamp is wrapped with banana leaves in bas-relief. A pair of vintage prints framed in Koa wood complete the look.
What makes the Hawaiian plan so flexible is that the bedroom can be closed for privacy or, depending on one’s mood, opened up completely to the living area and the view. Again, this space is awash with white and the details are picked out in natural textures. A bamboo blind in a tortoise shell finish can be lowered to filter the setting sun. The television on a cart enables viewing from either the bed or the chaise in the living area. When the tropical Trade Winds dwindle to a breath, the large paddle fan augments the cooling breeze. The step-saver kitchen is equipped with all the amenities of home. A stack washer/dryer and microwave are discreetly tucked into the cabinetry. It is the perfect spot to grab a morning cup of Kona coffee or whip together a light lunch before setting out to explore the island. Hawaii - Kitchen
